Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine is the song of my childhood. I've started noticing Ringo did a lot of kid involved things, which is why I know a lot of the things he did solo. Ringo is my favorite Beatle. We kind of have the same humor but i think I like him the most is because of his song 'Yellow Submarine'. My mom used to play it all the time and so did my elementary school. I wrote about the Beach Boys being a big part of my elementary school experience, but the Beatles songs involving water were all over the P.E. playlists.

Beastie Boys

I love the Beastie Boys because of how weird they sound. Every songs lyrics are so ridiculous and so are their voices. I always listen to their music before lacrosse practice to get me pumped and it puts me in a good mood.
My favorite song:

Led Zeppelin

Ok so i don't really like Led Zeppelin and i wasn't digging the songs that were like a billion years long. I already don't like rock without singing and then they're 4 minutes too long. Maybe once we learn more about them ill start to like them. So far it's a no for me.

Michael Buble - Christmas

Michael Buble was already awesome and then he made a Christmas album which made him even better. It was made two years ago and is number 2 on Itunes best selling albums now. That's saying something. My favorite song on the album is 'Ave Maria' because it's so pretty.

Arctic Monkeys

I like the arctic monkeys because they sound indie but are also getting more rock. I don't really listen to their lyrics, but i really like guitar in most of their songs. They sound a lot like The Black Keys. My favorite song is Knee Socks.

Magical Mystery Tour

Like 5 minutes before i started writing this I watched 5 minutes of Magical Mystery Tour, and it was rough. I've heard that if the first 5-10 minutes of a movie don't pull you in then the rest will suck. Not to be rude, but this movie sucked. I could hardly understand what they were saying and what I did understand wasn't funny. Also I think Ringo looks awful with facial hair.

Anyway, since we've started listening to The Beatles albums I've been downloading them onto my Itunes. I recently got a new laptop so i turned on the icloud, or whatever it's called it's way too confusing, and like 10 songs moved to my new laptop. Now I have like 40 of The Beatles songs and 12 of my new downloaded songs. But hey i'm not complaining. I've gotten so into them now, they're all I play in my car. My friends are just used to it now, haha.

Oh my god and I just looked at Heather's blog, and she is hilarious. Literally every post is talking about how stupid something is or how she hates it.

Die Antwoord

This week in astronomy Mr. Odell (who listens to a ton of weird music) played a band called 'Die Antwoord'. We watched the music video for the song 'Fatty Boom Boom'. It's probably the most disturbing thing I've ever seen in my life. I would go say watch the video for yourself but it's nasty. He was telling us the story about the band and it's a brother and sister from a really rough part of South Africa. I don't think you'll like their music but they're interesting. In the music video for 'Fatty Boom Boom' they're making fun of what Americans think of Africa. Throughout the whole video Lady Gaga is touring Africa and on every street corner there is a lion/panther.

One of their better songs:

Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite

To be honest I think this song is my favorite on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band because of the scene in Across the Universe. It's so trippy but it's funny. Like the guy who is singing the song in the movie seems kind of like he's making fun of the song by adding in his own vague little comments. But I also really like the song because of how they recorded the voices on the track. They sound echoey and I like the kind of creepy Circus music. I also think its just proof of how creative they were that they could take the poster of a circus and turn it into a song with really cool music/sounds.

The Lady is a Tramp

I was scrolling through my Itunes library and saw a song with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, I had totally forgotten about 'The Lady is a Tramp'. This song is so good, Lady Gaga is weird but her voice is amazing. Her and Tony Bennett's voices go together perfectly and it sounds like a song from the 40 or 50's.

Duffy

Recently i've been trying to find more music because im bored of all the stuff on my ipod now and a song popped into my head from like 4 years ago. It was a song by an artist named Duffy, she had a few hits and then disappeared (like MIA). I didn't like her big hit, the name is Mercy, because it was too overplayed. That's why i can't listen to the radio anymore, everything is just beat to death.
The song i remembered was 'Warwick Avenue', in my opinion it was the best song on her album. She sounds like a mix of Amy Winehouse and Adele. I think you would like her.

Warwick Avenue:

The Beach Boys

My elementary school was the Davis Dolphins, so naturally we had ocean themed EVERYTHING. Which made The Beach Boys a good band choice. They were always played during P.E., and we would sometimes make up workout routines to 'Surfin' U.S.A'. I can't remember a year when we didn't have some special routine to one of The Beach Boys songs. So they were a pretty big deal when I was in elementary school.

Also my life was completed when they were on Full House:

The Beatles

I've been getting into the Beatles recently, I downloaded their first album and its been on every time I play my music in my car. I think it's crazy how different their music was from the start and the end.

Lorde

so i went camping this weekend with some friends and the whole trip one of the girls i was with was playing Lorde's new album 'Pure Heroine'. I was suprised that we were actually listening to the whole album instead of that one song 'Royals'. I love the mix of her music, it's like techno rock. I think you would like some of her less popular songs.
My favorite:

First Aid Kit

I think this is a band you would like. They're two sisters from Sweden, and have performed at ACL. They're songs are kind of folksy, and their harmonies are perfect. They're voices are so pleasant and you can't tell that they aren't american. If you don't already know who they are, then you should go look them up on YouTube.

My favorite song:

The Who

So far out of all the bands we've been listening to in class The Who are one of my favorites. I'm not usually into classic rock, but they're really good. When  I listen to them I don't feel like every song sounds the same. I don't enjoy listening to them as much as i do The Beatles, but they aren't horrid like the Rollings Stones. They're a pleasant middle.

My favorite song of theirs:

The Black Keys

I've liked the Black Keys for a while, they have such unique sounding songs. When i think of Rock and Roll, i think of a sound like theirs. The guitar is always so intense in every song, but it fits in with the rest of the music perfectly. I like their background singers, because they sound like gospel singers.
Ok, and also Shaun White (my future husband) was in one of their music videos.

Favorite:

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down are so weird but they're so good. Her voice doesn't sound like it would come from her mouth. She looks so little and asian, but her voice is confident and big. She sounds like a lighter version of Elena Tonra from Daughter (The band i made my first blog about).

The Rolling Stones

I spent like a good 30 minutes trying to find a Rolling Stones song that i liked but i honestly could not. I know everyone is going to rant about how bad they are, but i'm not into this genre of music so its especially painful for me. I think that their music is kind of boring and repetitive, but that's how i feel about a lot of stuff that came from the 70s and 80s.
I say that now but your class is actually making me think about music and really listen and appreciate it, so my opinion might change.

Sammy Adams

So recently ive been listening to this white rapper named Sammy Adams. Hes pretty good, but he's also really hot.
I found out about him because i went to a Hoodie Allen show last year and made a Pandora playlist and his songs came up. At first i didn't even listen, i just looked at his picture on the album cover but when i started to listen to his voice and the lyrics i fell even more in love. He;s really talented and the stuff he raps about is awesome. Some of the lyrics are saying how he doesn't need a college degree to be successful. IDK i think he's cool.
This is my fav song:

Ms Mr

My favorite song Hurricane sounds kind of 'vintage', like a mix of something old and then mix in some of the new alternative female singers. Its kind of like a mix of Lana Del Ray and Florence and the Machine in a good way. I really like the lyrics, she talks about how crazy her brain is and i relate. Big time.
Well, this is my favorite song Hurricane:

Phosphorescent

This is ANOTHER weird singer that I like. His voice isn't that good, but when it's combined with the music i think it sounds awesome. Now that i'm really focusing on his voice, it kind of sounds creepy and really alternative.
You might like him, i can't really decide. I think you'll either really like him, or really hate him.
Anywho, this is my favorite song of his
Wolves:

You Lie by The Band Perry

Ok, Ok i know i said i hate country but this is one of like the 3 i like (Your Man - Josh Turner, When i'm gone - Hunter Hayes). Her voice sounds amazing with the harmonies and im feelin the banjo. Im pretty sure you'll hate it.
OH, and i think the things he'll lie like are funny.
You Lie - The Band Perry:

Arctic Monkeys

So Adrien was listening to them a few years ago and I really liked them, but then i kind of forgot about them. When i was looking at the lineup for this weekend at ACL I saw their name was on it and looked them up again. I really like how rock and roll it is, it makes me want to 'break shit' as you would say.
The song Brainstorm really makes me want to.

Arcade Fire

So I had watched SNL earlier this week where Tina Fey was the host and Arcade Fire was the musical guest, then we watched that documentary and I noticed that they were in it as like some back up singers/the people screaming into the microphones. They were really weird on SNL because they had like all the skin around their eyes covered in black eye shadow, but their music was good.
Im really diggin their song Reflektor:

The Beatles

I was trying to not do a Beatles post because i know everyone else will be doing one but i guess its inevitable.
For the past few years I've been telling people I don't like the Beatles because they we're overrated but it was because i just wanted to be different because EVERYONE loves the Beatles. Now that we spent a while listening to their music and watching that documentary I am starting to realize just how talented they really were. They were also really funny, and kind of like normal teenage boys (in the early 60's).
Ok and i don't know if you've noticed but the faces Ringo makes when he's playing the drums is so funny. I don't even know how to describe it but it's like he's not focusing on anything with his eyes and just like shaking his head to the beat.
My favorite song is Eleanor Rigby:

Ana's Song - Silverchair (WARNING: very personal)

Ana's Song by Silverchair isn't the typical song I would listen to. It's like the punk/underground instruments, but the lyrics are what makes this song special to me.
In this song Daniel John's is singing about his eating disorder. All the lyrics in the song I relate to. There is a part where he sings 'Ana wrecks your life' and it makes me think of last year. I missed the first semester because I was in a residential treatment center in Arizona. I would listen to this song all the time the month before i left. I was so sick and this song described how i felt. Daniel sings about how Ana is his obsession, and how it can control him and make him act. Some of the lyrics also describe how he's like a prisoner but he'll do anything for 'it'. I can't fit everything i want to say about my eating disorder or how it made me feel because i don't know how to type it out. But this song can describe it. If you listen to it, you'll get a better understanding of what i went through and how i feel.
On a more positive note I am in recovery and don't want to ever feel that way again, it's a struggle daily but i wont stop fighting.
I hope i'm not over sharing but this song is really personal for me and i want to share who i am through music because its hard for me to say in words.

Ana's Song - Silverchair

David Bowie

ok not gonna lie, i went through a phase where i was obsessed with David Bowie. I was IN LOVE with him. The first time I ever saw him was in the movie Labyrinth. From that day on i was soo into him. I don't even know why. I still love that movie. The song 'Dance Magic' in the movie is one of my all time favorites.
When i was watching the movie i think i was 2nd grade and when her brother was taken i was so scared my brother was going to get taken and so i cried for the rest of the movie. I still choke up when i watch it, its ridiculous.
Anywho this song makes me happy and want to dance. It's one of the first songs i remember hearing so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Saturday, September 7, 2013

I don't think Elvis is a bad singer, I think he's pretty good but he's definitely overrated. He was kind of the beginning of the teen idol. His voice didn't sound like a lot of other singers at the time, if you haven't noticed (becuase i say that in like every post)  I really like that in a singer. Most everything about him was new and out of people's comfort zones. He was pretty 'dangerous' compared to the other famous singers at the time.
Ok not gonna lie, he was pretty hot too. That was another thing that made him more popular.

Reasons Why

I really like the harmonies that Nickel Creek sing. I don't usually like bluegrass, i wouldn't touch anything even remotely country with a ten foot pole, but this band is AH-MAZING. This album was made like 10ish years ago, they were pretty young (early 20's) and you can hear it in their voices but it's like fresh not beginner. I don't know how to explain it. I was raised on their album and music like it and i'm just now starting to explore it and appreciate it. You probably won't like it, but I think you'll appreciate it. They play all the instruments themselves and every song on their album is acoustic.

My favorite song right now is 'Reasons Why':

Ok so i just watched that video and it's creepy, but i like the song. So just listen to that one.

This one is better

Buddy Holly and rock n roll in the 50's

I think Buddy Holly is strange. I don't think his voice fits the way he looks. I think the music we've been listening in class is ok, it's not my favorite but its not something i dislike. I don't think it's as interesting listening to them without watching them perform. The performances are really crazy and it's not the same just sitting and listening to it. I think most of the music we've listened to from the 50's is kind of boring, maybe it's just what i've been raised listening to is so different I can't appreciate it as well as other people. I do respect that its the beginning of Rock n Roll but it's just not my cup of tea.

Marina & the Diamonds

One of my favorite artists for the past 2 years is Marina and the Diamonds. Her music is really different and i love her lyrics, they make me think. She made a character named Electra Heart and when her album was finished and she ended her tour she announced 'Electra died of a broken heart', I think it's so interesting that she can make a character but still be so original and herself. She has such a strong personality and isn't afraid of taking fashion risks, she has different styles that she dresses as, she has 50s/60s outfits and her punk/dark look.  She is a true artist, I've watched a lot of her live performances and interviews and she always turns the personal questions back to her singing, I think its nice as well that when she gets compliments she accepts them, she knows she has talent and there's nothing wrong with that. I love listening to her voice because it has such a wide range of pitches.  My favorite songs are 'Lies' and 'Fear and Loathing'.

The music in my life

I don't like a certain genre of music, If i like a song then i'll download it and look up other songs by that artist. I have the most random songs on my phone, they range from Iggy Azaelia to Simon & Garfunkel.
Right now i've been listening to Daughter a lot. The music is simple and her voice isn't that unique but there's something about the way she sings. The songs are slow and the lyrics are meaningful. It makes me feel calm and its still a song that i can listen to any other time. My favorite song right now is 'Touch'.
